Books and articles

We all need to learn new things. One of the best ways is by carefully listening to those who know different things than we do. Throughout many journeys through books and articles, ranging from low-level programming, through architecture and design, and all the way to group dynamics and management, here are some of our most important findings; some of them changed the way we think forever.

Oh, and don't forget to read Skeleton Software's 2 Pages Series, also available for free download on our downloads section!

 C++, C#, and .NET Framework

Beyond the C++ Standard Library was written by one of Skeleton Software's founders, so it has to be listed on this page. If you are serious about programming in C++, the book (and more importantly Boost) is something that will be useful to you. The author of the book would like to mention that the writing is a bit dry, and that his forthcoming books will more accurately reflect his bad sense of humor.

Management and group dynamics

The Starfish and the Spider is one of those books that make the mind work in new ways. For many of us, the thought of organizations without strict hierarchies is somewhat disturbing. This book provides fantastic insights for anyone interested in how organizations actually work, and how they can be improved. Beware -- your thoughts on what modern organizations should be like will be provoked if you read this book.
Images of Organization uses the power of metaphor to analyze how organizations work -- or could work. The book has a fantastic way of letting the reader make up her own mind on how and why things work the way they do. From the purely mechanistic view of organizations (yuck) to the brain metaphor and beyond, the book is simply a mind-blowing experience. It will take some time to read through and appreciate the text because of the inherent challenge to your own associations, but it is well worth the time.

Communication

Writing is one of the most important forms of communication these days. Thus, you have every reason to try and communicate clearly and entertaining; that's true if you're writing business documents, proposals, articles, or just email. On Writing Well is a classic. It shows you common errors and how to avoid them. With this book, William Zinsser helps you learn how to write well. It's surprisingly fun to read! It can be fun to write, too.
The Elements of Style is a short and very direct book. You are told (indeed you are) the right and wrong way to use certain words, styles, punctuations, and so forth. Although the book is not exactly fun to read, it is very rewarding because it helps you make better choices when writing. If you have a very dry sense of humor, you might even laugh once in a while.
